In the past decade, the number of online banking users has increased rapidly. This has led many developers to investigate on more convenient methods for customers to perform remote transactions. Mobile banking is a new convenient scheme for customers to perform transactions. Mobile banking is predicted to increase as the number of mobile phone users increase.
At the moment South African banks like Standard Bank, ABSA and FNB provide mobile banking through two channels; i.e. through WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) over GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and SMS using the WIG (Wireless Internet Gateway).
In this project, we proposed to investigate the security issues involved with mobile banking using the cellular GSM network. The goal of this project is to build applications for portable devices that ensure users can securely send their banking information via the GSM network. The types of mobile banking solutions we have selected for this project are SMS banking and GPRS banking.
