S Berman
- Steering Committee member for new Chair of Computer Science at UWC.
- External Examiner of Unisa and UWC courses, and at Rhodes (MSc theses).
- Developed and taught a 3-day course on Databases for the NBN at SA National Bioinformatics Institute (March 2004).
- Member of the NRF Review Panel evaluating NRF grant applications in the ICT Focus Area, and reviewer for SAICSIT and SACJ.
- Mentor of a Mellon Foundation MMUF student working in the field of knowledge management.
D Cook
- Chair of the South African Computer Olympiad Technical committee, and Coach of the South African Olympiad team. He also oversees the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest at UCT and is the UCT site manager.
- Attended the finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest in Prague where the UCT team reached 15th place out of 75 in the competition.

- Women in Computer Graphics Tour of South Africa, October - November
This tour was organised as a joint venture of Afrigraph and ACM SIGGRAPH with the intention of promoting Computer Graphics as a viable career for women in South Africa. A senior European professor and five leading women in the field talked about exciting trends in Computer Graphics world-wide and their work and careers. The tour visited 6 universities (Pretoria, Wits, Rhodes, UPE, Stellenbosch and UCT) and presentations were given to over 450 school pupils and university students.

P Kritzinger
- Responsible for UCT signing a Memorandum of Cooperation with Institut National des Télécommunications, in Evry France.
- Joint Research Agreement was entered into by UCT and IBM Research GmbH, Switzerland with P. Kritzinger as the local research partner.

- External Examiner at UPE and Stellenbosch.
- Sat on ISO 20282 committee (Usability of Consumer Devices).
H Suleman
- Member of the Board of Directors of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD), an international organisation to promote the widespread adoption of digital library technology in higher education.
- Worked on the redesign of the NDLTD website, with the assistance of a number of UNESCO-funded student assistants.
- Worked as a consultant for the DISA project, evaluating their current use of technology and recommending future directions, in a technical sense, as their project progresses into its second phase.

Staff Development
G Stewart, A Potgieter and H Suleman participated in the year-long New Academic Practitioner Programme (NAPP) in its debut year at UCT, which included general meetings, a 3-day retreat in April and numerous workshops during the course of the year.
