New Staff

• The department held its inaugural Open Evening on 19 October, with guests invited from industry and the education sector. The event was well received and is set to be a permanent event on the departmental calendar.
• The Shuttleworth Laboratory was opened with 66 new PCs running Open Source software, donated by the Shuttleworth Foundation to the Science Faculty. This has been extensively used in CS courses, with appropriate Open Source tools.
• IBM donated a variety of equipment towards the launch of a Linux Competency Centre at UCT. This provides advanced platforms for experimentation and is well situated to enhance collaboration with industry partners.

Awards

• The UCT ACM programming team (Tian, Wiggins and Gallotta) won first position in the EMEA region, in the international contest, and won the parallel programming challenge at the 29th ACM ICPC in Shangai, China
