This document describes the Department of Computer Sciences' undergraduate teaching facilities.

Undergraduate Teaching Facilities

  • Senior Lab
  • Shuttleworth Open-Source Lab (TSL)
First year Computer Science students should make use of the Faculty of Sciences' SCILAB facilities or the Shuttleworth Open-Source Lab.

Senior Lab

The Computer Science Senior Lab is located on the top floor of the PD Hahn Building on Upper Campus.

It is available for use by Computer Science students their second and third years of studies.

The lab consists of 102 workstations as follows:
  • 35 dual-boot Windows XP and Ubuntu linux
  • 47 Ubuntu linux thin-clients
  • 20 old Windows XP machines

Shuttleworth Open-Source Lab


This lab is owned by the Faculty of Science and administered on a adhoc basis by the Department of Computer Science. This lab does not currently have an administrator.

The lab consists of 85 Ubuntu linux machines.

It is available for use by all University of Cape Town staff and students 24 hours a day during term time.

The following additional services are available for use or off-campus:
  • 2 Windows terminal servers
  • 1 Unix shell server
