MASTERS AND DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE @ CAIR Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research

The Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research offers merit based scholarships for Masters and Doctoral scholarships in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Cape Town. The scholarships are funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), as part of the ICT Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Roadmap implementation. Advances in ICT supported by the RDI Roadmap aim to guide South Africa to a state of digital advantage that will strengthen economic competitiveness and enable an enhanced quality of life for all South Africans. The scholarships will be administered by the CSIR and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR).

The University of Cape Town node of CAIR (CAIR-UCT) conducts research in the following sub-areas of AI:
 Adaptive and Cognitive Systems
 Statistical Machine Learning
 Knowledge Representation and Reasoning

Successful applicants will register for a full-time Masters or Doctoral degree in Computer Science at the University of Cape Town. Masters and Doctoral students must be supervised by a member of CAIR-UCT.


Eligibility criteria:
 BSc Honours degree in Computer Science for Masters scholarships;
 Masters degree in Computer Science for Doctoral scholarships;
 Masters and Doctoral students will require a preliminary research topic and outline accepted by a member of CAIR-UCT;
 Academic excellence at all preceding academic levels.

Masters scholarships will be R100 000 per year for a maximum of two years and Doctoral scholarships R130 000 per year for a maximum of three years. These funding levels are subject to revision and student progress. Scholarships will be awarded primarily on merit but will also take into account the collective demographic composition of recipients.

Applications should be submitted to the CAIR administrator, Mrs Tharien Potgieter tharien.potgieter@uct.ac.za by 20 September 2018. Applications should include the following:
 A research topic and outline of at most one page, including name of prospective supervisor;
 Full academic record, including all tertiary results;
 Abbreviated curriculum vitae of at most one page.
